Best time to visit: year round

What to do and what to see:

Immense blue sky and majestic mountains await you in Albuquerque, and any time of year is an excellent time to visit. This ancient-meets-modern city has pleasantly low humidity year-round, and the famed Rio Grande River flows through the city while the Sandia Mountains tower over Albuquerque’s eastern side. If you’ve seen photos of countless colorful hot-air balloons framed in a cloudless sky, you’ve no doubt seen the city’s famous International Balloon Festival, held in yearly in early October. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, there are plentiful hiking trails, bike paths and parks, and local tours on horseback grant views from a different perspective. And if you prefer getting your feet wet, the mighty Rio Grande River offers adventures in kayaking and whitewater rafting. The area is rich with Native American heritage, and Old Town Albuquerque (circa 1706) contains centuries-old adobe buildings for history enthusiasts to explore. The catchy names of some of Albuquerque’s attractions are bound to stir some interest, such as the Petroglyph National Monument, the Turquoise Trail, the American International Rattlesnake Museum, and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. And another must-see attraction includes the Biological Park located in the historic neighborhood of Barelas, east of the Rio Grande. The four-facility Bio-Park includes the Albuquerque Aquarium, the Rio Grande Botanic Garden, the 64-acre Rio Grande Zoo, and Tingley Beach fishing area. Grab the sunscreen and a few extra water bottles, and head to Albuquerque for some sun-filled exploration!
