Several miles off the eastern mainland shore of New Jersey lies he beautiful barrier island of Long Island Beach, and this destination offers everything that beachcombers could want. Kayakers, surfers, sailors, jet skiers and fishermen will have plenty of sites to explore, either in Barnegat Bay to the western mainland side, or the mighty Atlantic Ocean to the east. And the sugar-white beaches are plentiful, with public access available through purchased passes. Settled in 1690, Long Beach is aptly named at 18 miles in length, and wildlife buffs will love the nature reserve located on the southern tip of the island. The northern tip of the island is home to the 150-year old Barnegat Lighthouse and State Park, a popular site for tourists. With fresh seafood this close, patrons can enjoy freshly prepared ocean fare at one of dozens of quality restaurants. And plenty of activities beyond the beach will keep travelers occupied with a wide array of choices for shopping, golf, miniature golf, arcades, batting cages and even a concert series in Bicentennial Park. Any time of year is great for a visit, and locals swear that the off-season is the best time to leave the mainland and take in the beauty of Long Island Beach.
