What to do and what to see:

San Francisco, California is a world renowned, multi-cultural metropolis nicknamed The City by the Bay. Devastated by earthquake and fire and subsequently rebuilt in 1906, this popular destination is located on the West Coast of the U.S. in north/central California. Known for its cold ocean fog in the spring and summer, the bay area is home to the famous Golden Gate Bridge, a photo opportunity and must-see icon for every visitor. The city is also known for its 50-plus hills located within the city, creating a beautiful rolling landscape prime for viewing from the city’s historic cable car transit system. Off shore, tourists flock via air or water to Alcatraz (the infamous island prison), Treasure Island, Yerba Buena Island, and several others. The city maintains more than 200 parks, and visitors always enjoy the stunning 1000 acres of Golden Gate Park as well as Lake Merced and Candlestick Point. San Francisco is replete with museums, as well as venues for all genres of the performing arts including opera houses, theaters, ballet companies, symphonies, and abundant offerings in film and stage. While the coastline is plentiful, the cold Pacific waters and extremely strong currents lend themselves more to the bravery of skilled surfers than to the casual beach swimmer, and the historical maritime connections to the area can be seen in the historic ships moored at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Sports fans in the city rave about the San Francisco 49ers, the championship American football team, as well as baseball’s San Francisco Giants, connected with world-class athletes Willie Mays and Barry Bonds. If sports and sightseeing aren’t extreme enough, adventurous souls can test their mettle on a surfboard at Ocean Beach, mountain bike the more difficult trails of Angel Island, or strap on the harness and tackle the challenging indoor climbing walls of Mission Cliffs. Locals point to April and October as the best months to visit, and travelers are sure to bring home the best of memories from a visit to the City by the Bay.
